The Redline – A Vampire Flash Fiction Feature by J.D. Brown

The last train left at midnight.

Clara sprinted through the rain-slicked streets, her boots slapping puddles as the storm chased her down the empty platform. The subway loomed ahead, mouth agape and waiting, its lights flickering like a dying pulse. She ducked through the doors as they hissed shut, barely missing her coat.

Only two other passengers sat in the car: an old man asleep under a blanket of newspapers, and a woman in a sleek black coat, lips blood-red against porcelain skin.

Clara dropped into a seat and pulled out her cracked phone. No signal. No surprise. The Redline always dipped into dead zones between stations.

“You’re bleeding,” the woman said.

Clara looked up. “Excuse me?”

The woman pointed delicately at Clara’s hand. A long, shallow gash crossed her palm. She’d forgotten it—the price of scaling a rusted fence on her shortcut from the club.

“It’s nothing,” Clara muttered, wrapping it in her sleeve.

The woman tilted her head. “It smells like copper and regret.”

“Excuse me?” Clara blinked.

The woman smiled. “Most people don’t hear it, but your blood hums. Like it remembers something you forgot.”

Clara stared, unsure whether to laugh or switch cars. “You’re creepy, you know that?”

The woman stood and moved closer, heels clicking like clock hands counting down.

“You shouldn’t be on this train tonight.”

“Why? Are you gonna bite me?”

That smile again—sharp this time.

“No. But he might.”

A low groan echoed from the far end of the car. The old man under the newspapers shifted, then convulsed. The papers slid to the floor, revealing a face too pale, eyes too black, mouth too full of jagged teeth.

Clara scrambled back. “What the hell?”

The woman didn’t flinch.

“He followed the storm. Some of them do. They smell panic like perfume.”

Clara’s breath fogged the window behind her. The thing—man—monster—sniffed the air, teeth clicking.

“I don’t—I don’t understand.”

“You’re dreaming,” the woman said. “That’s the only way you’ll survive this.”

Clara shook her head. “This isn’t a dream.”

“It is now.”

The car lights flared and died. For a moment, only the sound of steel wheels and a growling hunger filled the darkness.

Then the woman moved.

Clara didn’t see her cross the space—just a blur, a flick of shadow, then the monster was on the floor, pinned by something cold and ancient in the shape of a woman.

Claws scraped. Screeches echoed. The train rocked with their violence.

When the lights flickered back, the monster was gone.

Clara pressed herself into the seat, shaking.

“You killed him.”

“No.” The woman wiped blood from her cheek with a silk handkerchief. “I unmade him. He was hollow already.”

“What are you?”

The woman paused, thoughtful.

“Something old that learned to walk through nightmares without becoming one.”

Clara swallowed. “Why help me?”

The woman sat beside her. “You’ve seen things, haven’t you? Things that don’t make sense. Shadows moving when they shouldn’t. Faces in mirrors that aren’t your own. And that scar on your shoulder—”

Clara flinched. “You shouldn’t know about that.”

“I do. Because I remember what it felt like, waking up changed. Afraid. Angry. Hungry for answers.”

The train screeched as it pulled into an unfamiliar station. The lights outside were flickering crimson.

“This isn’t on the map,” Clara whispered.

“It’s not meant to be.” The woman stood. “This stop only appears when someone chooses.”

“Chooses what?”

“To keep pretending the world is what it seems… or step into the dark and learn the truth.”

Clara’s throat tightened. “What truth?”

“That monsters exist,” the woman said. “But so do those who hunt them. And sometimes, they’re the same thing.”

The doors hissed open.

“Who are you?” Clara asked.

The woman gave that eerie smile one last time.

“Call me Red. I collect girls like you.”

Clara looked at the platform. Figures waited in the red-tinted fog—some cloaked, some fanged, some human. All watching.

And somehow, Clara knew this was where her nightmares had always been leading.

She stood.

And followed Red into the dark.

Okay, now that you’ve got the lowdown on the plot and themes, let’s get into my personal take on Time’s Convert.

Okay, now for the real tea. I’ve gotta say, I was totally smitten with Marcus and Phoebe’s love story. Their bond felt so real and deep, and the way it played out across different time periods was just chef’s kiss. Harkness also nailed the historical aspect again, which is always a huge draw for me. I felt like I was right there in the midst of the Revolutionary War, dodging musket balls alongside Marcus.

However, I did have a few minor gripes. The pacing felt a bit uneven at times, especially when the story jumped back and forth between past and present. And while I loved seeing glimpses of Matthew and Diana, I did miss them a bit. Their presence in the original trilogy was so strong, and their absence here was noticeable.

Overall though, Time’s Convert was a worthy addition to the All Souls universe. It’s a captivating story of love, loss, and the challenges of embracing change. If you’re a fan of historical fiction with a supernatural twist, and you’re a sucker for a good love story, then this book is definitely for you. It’s a solid 4 out of 5 stars from me!

Midoriya is a character you can’t help but want to root for. Despite the fact that he was born Quirkless, he never gave up on his dream to become a hero. He worked hard to get where he is and you can’t help but want the best for him.

Reason 3 – An Interesting Take On The Superhero Genre

Normally in media when there’s a show or movie about superheroes, the hero is the odd one out with a special power that no one else has. However, in the MHA universe, around 80% of the population has a superpower. So, there are so many interesting and fun powers around. Uraraka can make objects weightless; Todoroki can generate ice from the right side of his body and fire from the left; Aoyama can fire a laser blast from his belly button. You get the idea. There are a lot of cool and unique Quirks around to keep you entertained.

Reason 4 – Exciting Fights

And since almost everyone is a superhero, that means there are a lot of epic fight scenes that will keep you hooked on the show. With all of the characters using their own unique Quirks to fight, there’s always something exciting going on. You may want to avoid spoilers, but this showcases some of the best fights from seasons 1-4.

Like every show, there’s always an antagonist. And MHA has a fair few itself. Since we’re in a world filled with superpowers that means the villains also have their own powers as well. Which makes them formidable opponents for even the strongest of heroes.

What is Odd Thomas?

Odd Thomas is the name of our underdog protagonist. Yes, the guy’s name really is Odd Thomas – odd, right? Working as a short order cook in a diner, he mainly spends his time waiting for customers and hanging out with his girlfriend, Stormy, the manager of a mall ice cream shop. His life is easy and uncomplicated if a little underachieved; he has no car, no property; and not much going for him.

The Odd Thomas movie is directed and written by acclaimed writer and director Stephen Sommers – famous for the cult classic movie franchise The Mummy. Those who are familiar with The Mummy may expect Sommer’s classic action shots and use of quick zooms, slow-motion fighting and freeze-frames. Dynamic and exciting, the Saturn Award nominee knows how to create action-packed movies to keep the audience entertained.

The Odd Thomas Movie: Our Overview!

The desert small town in California gives us the distinct taste of small-town America, a perfect setting for the urban fantasy series.

Odd Thomas can see dead people and in his own words, “I see dead people, but then, by God, I do something about it.”

One day, Odd has a macabre encounter with faceless people wearing bowling shirts crying out for Odd to save them. This is followed immediately by Odd and the faceless victims being gunned down by a faceless gunman. Slightly perturbed by the dream, Odd goes for his shift in the diner, where he serves lunge to a man called Robert Robertson. Dubbed as Fungus Bob (because his hair looks like some type of bacterial growth), the man is surrounded by creatures known as bodachs. These creatures feed on evil and carnage and are a sign something horribly violent is doomed to come.

Odd knows something is up. Using his psychic magnetism, Odd follows Fungus Bob. He ends up at the mall where Odd’s girlfriend, Stormy, manages an ice cream store. Going on to follow Fungus Bob to his home, he breaks in and uncovers some disturbing information.

Odd finds a file containing newspaper clippings of mass murderers, meticulously ordered by name. Odd takes in the surroundings. With a looming sense of dread, he realises that Fungus Bob is planning something terrible. Odd reports his findings to Chief Porter, whom he has an agreement with. The chief knows about his abilities and takes the heads up.

Odd is led by his powers to a bowling alley, where the new uniform matches the ones he saw in his dream. Chief Porter sends Officer Varner to watch the place but Varner is suspicious about Odd’s judgement.

What follows next is a trail of carnage: an officer has been mauled to death by dogs; Fungus Bob is found shot to death in Odd’s bathtub, with evidence framing Odd for the murder; Chief Porter is shot in a home invasion and is in serious condition.

Returning to Bob’s home, Odd finds a lot of items which are cause for concern, none moreso than the fridge and freezer full of human body parts so Robertson’s poltergeist destroys the house and the evidence is lost.

Odd recognises that Fungus Bob has a tattoo matching Officer Varner’s. Realising the two are conspiring, Odd urgently follows his psychic magnetism to the mall. There, the security staff have been murdered by Officer Eckles. Successfully disabling the officer, Odd takes his pistol and seeks out Varner.

He follows the screams to the area of the mall Stormy works and there he kills another gunman as he attempts to reload the automatic weapon. A lingering spirit guides Odd to the loading dock where Bob’s moving van is packed with explosives on a time, prepared to kill first responders and people in the mall as they try to escape.

Odd then takes the van and drives it away from the mall when Varner returns and attempts to kill Odd. He manages to jump from the van as Varner enters the cab, which sends the van into a ditch and explodes – killing Varner.

Odd wakes up in the hospital to Stormy tending him. He is hailed as a local hero but the only thing on his mind is spending time with Stormy. At Stormy’s apartment, Odd finds out that Stormy had been killed in the mall shooting and he had been spending time only with her spirit. Odd bids Stormy to go to the afterlife and not stay as a restless spirit.

After a tearful goodbye, Odd travels to Las Vegas to continue to help the living and the dead.

Whether intentional or through the anticipated carnage of his planned mass murder, bodachs follow him. Robert seems to idolise serial killers and even has an empty folder in his collection of serial killer profiles reserved just for himself.
• Nico Tortorella as Officer Simon Varner. Varner worked alongside Bob to try and commit the mass shooting in the mall.
• Kyle McKeever as Officer Bern Eckles. Alongside Varner and Bob, McKeever also was in on the plan to commit the mass shooting.
