The Houses Of Hogwarts

There are four houses in the Harry Potter Wizarding World – Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. It’s usually the job of the sorting hat test to decide who goes into which house. Gryffindor

House Motto: ‘You might belong in Gryffindor, Where dwell the brave at heart, Their daring, nerve and chivalry Set Gryffindors apart.’

Gryffindor was founded by Godric Gryffindor. Godric was an English wizard who was one of the founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where his portrait still hangs.

The element for Gryffindor is fire and the house mascot is a lion. The house colors are red and gold. Gryffindor members are known for their courage, bravery, boldness and determination.

Ravenclaw

The Ravenclaw element is air and the house mascot is an eagle. The house colors are bronze and blue. Ravenclaw members are said to be known for their wisdom, wit, intelligence and cleverness.

Hufflepuff

Hufflepuff was founded by Helga Hufflepuff. Helga was a Welsh witch who was one of the founders of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The element represented by Hufflepuff is earth and the house mascot is a badger. The house colors are yellow and black. Hufflepuff House members are known to be hardworking, patient and loyal with a strong sense of justice.

Notable members include: Newt Scamander, Cedric Diggory and Nymphadora Tonks.

Slytherin

Slytherin was formed by Salazar Slytherin, who was one the founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Salazar was a pure blood wizard and he was known for his determination and cunning.

The element of Slytherin is water and the house mascot is a snake. The house colors are green and gold. Slytherin members are known for traits such as cunning, determination, resourcefulness and ambition.

Notable members include: Severus Snape, Draco Malfoy and Lord Voldemort.

There are seven fantasy novels in the Harry Potter series written by British author J. K. Rowling.

The reading order of the Harry Potter books is as follows:

1 – Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
2 – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
3 – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
4 – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
5 – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

In the first novel, we are introduced to the young wizard, Harry Potter, and his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. The three friends are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The arc of the main story then covers Harry’s struggles against Lord Voldemort. Voldemort is a dark wizard who wishes to become immortal. Once he has achieved immortality it is then his intention to overthrow the Ministry of Magic (the wizard governing body) and dominate all wizards and Muggles (non-magical people).

Since it’s release the books have sold more than 500 million copies worldwide and they have become the best-selling book series in history. It has also been translated into eighty languages.

In 2001 the first book was released as a movie, which was followed by the rest of the series making it to the big screen. The movie stars Daniel Radcliffe as the titular wizard. With Emma Watson as Hermione, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy and Alan Rickman as Severus Snape. The success of the films and books have made Harry Potter one of the most successful franchises of all time.

Harry Potter Spin Offs

Due to the success of the franchise there is also a spin off movie series, Fantastic Beasts. There are two Harry Potter Fantastic Beasts movies which serve as prequels to the main Harry Potter movie series. These movies are based on the Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them guidebook written by JK Rowling. The second movie, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, was released on April 15 2022.
