A Fire in the Flesh

The only thing that can save the realms now is the one thing more powerful than the Fates.

After a startling betrayal ends with both Sera and the dangerously seductive ruler of the Shadowlands she has fallen madly in love with being held captive by the false King of the Gods, there is only one thing that can free Nyktos and prevent the forces of the Shadowlands from invading Dalos and igniting a War of Primals.

Convincing Kolis won’t be easy, though – not even with a lifetime of training. While his most favored Revenant is insistent that she is nothing more than a lie, Kolis’s erratic nature and twisted sense of honor leave her shaken to the core, and nothing could’ve prepared her for the cruelty of his Court or the shocking truths revealed. The revelations not only upend what she has understood about her duty and the very creation of the realms but also draw into question exactly what the true threat is. However, surviving Kolis is only one part of the battle. The Ascension is upon her, and Sera is out of time.

But Nyktos will do anything to keep Sera alive and give her the life she deserves. He’ll even risk the utter destruction of the realms, and that’s exactly what will happen if he doesn’t Ascend as the Primal of Life. Yet despite his desperate determination, their destinies may be out of their hands.

But there is that foreseen unexpected thread—the unpredictable, unknown, and unwritten. The only thing more powerful than the Fates…

A Fire in the Flesh: The Following of Startling Betrayals…

Overview

In A Fire in the Flesh, the third installment of the Flesh and Fire series by Jennifer L. Armentrout, the narrative centers around Sera, who was captured by Kolis at the end of the previous book, A Light in the Flame.

The story delves into the character of Kolis, portraying him as an exceptionally complex and disturbed individual. We note that the exploration of Kolis’s character and the darker themes associated with him make the first half of the book a challenging and slower read compared to other works by Jennifer L. Armentrout.

The story begins with intense action scenes and a confrontation between Nyktos and Kolis. The unexpected occurs as Nyktos falls, leading to Kolis capturing both Sera and Nyktos. Throughout most of the story, Sera is confined in a gilded cage with occasional visits from the unhinged Kolis, who believes her to be his lost love. Meanwhile, Nyktos is held elsewhere, and Sera remains uncertain about his well-being.

Sera navigates her captivity, needing to tread lightly to save Nyktos.

Despite the challenges in the middle section, where Sera is trying to escape, the last part of the story shines when the lovers, Sera and Nyktos, are reunited.

Review

Jennifer Armentrout has truly delivered a knockout with her latest addition to the Flesh and Fire series!

Picking up right where A Light in the Flame left off, A Fire in the Flesh wastes no time and catapults the reader into a gripping narrative. Sera and Nyktos find themselves in the clutches of Kolis, who firmly believes that Sera is the reincarnation of Sotoria, his ultimate vulnerability. To secure Nyktos’s freedom, Sera faces the daunting task of convincing Kolis of her identity. However, a lifetime of preparation cannot prepare her for the challenges ahead. As the Ascension looms, time becomes an enemy, and Sera is in a race against it.

This installment exceeded all our expectations. From the very first page, I was hooked and devoured the book. The love and devotion between Sera and Nyktos will definitely have you engaged and pulled-in throughout. Sera’s strength and fierceness, coupled with her willingness to defy the odds for love, kept me on the edge of my seat. Nyktos, the ultimate book boyfriend (if only they were real!), showcased unwavering dedication, ready to risk everything for Sera’s happiness. The connection between them is nothing short of extraordinary, leaving me eager for more of their story.

A Flesh in the Fire masterfully addresses lingering questions while unraveling captivating revelations. Armentrout strategically places breadcrumbs for readers, and the unveiled secrets left me astonished. While not concluding on a typical cliffhanger, the story feels more like a “to-be-continued,” setting the stage for the final book, Born of Blood and Ash, releasing next year.
