There is very little known about this book – so we’re going to have to be on our toes to gnab a copy as soon as it’s released! However, many people have differing views on the release of this novel. It should be noted that this is not a main book in the series, but rather another spin-off. Whilst many people enjoy the opportunity to revisit some characters and feed on more lore, others do not hold the same sentiment. One GoodReads user voiced their opinion: “Wth is this Jen?? I’ll tell you. It’s a money grab. No one could give one flying lick about this book.“

Our Review

JLA has skillfully flipped the script with the latest addition to the Blood and Ash series. This alternate POV installment not only adds depth to the cherished narrative but also blends excitement and drama which makes for a truly irresistible read.

Picking up right after the climactic events of the previous book, the story follows Poppy as she grapples with the aftermath. Unexpectedly, she enters a rejuvenating slumber that promises transformation upon her awakening. This allows Cass to display his intensely protective nature as he tends to his resting wife. Through his perspective, we are treated to their early moments and the evolution of their love story.

Is there anything better than a hero who is completely smitten with his girl? Watching that hero go from emotionally crumpled to slowly learning that he also deserves love is heart-melting and tear-inducing in its own right.

I love that this book it puts a different spin on the story, and particularly enjoyed watching the twists and turns from the end of the first book. Now we may fully understand Casteel’s actions and the purpose behind them. It was truly fascinating to go back and re-explore such scenes.

It offers an opportunity not only to witness past events but also, through intermittent present-day chapters, to delve into Casteel’s reflections on that period, which is truly captivating. His evolving emotions for Poppy are undeniable, and while this is just the inception of their love story, its beauty is profoundly evident.

Throughout the journey, we’re treated to heartwarming moments with the familiar side characters we’ve grown fond of, both from the past and the present. This includes some newer faces that add a delightful touch of lightheartedness and enjoyment. Revisiting these relationships offers a lovely perspective on how they’ve flourished over the course of the series.

Our Review

We absolutely adored the first book, and we fell in love with Sera and Nyktos as much, if not more, than we did with Poppy and Cas. Here it was mostly Sera and Nyktos going around in a circle, tiptoeing around each other, and trying to figure out what they felt for each other and how to behave with each other.

If you love slow-burn, then this is the book for you!

We adore the main character. She is strong and determined to do whatever it takes to help the mortal realm, and also the Shadowlands because she came to care for the people she met there. Her character is every bit as engaging as Poppy (we see where she gets it from!)

Their romance also has this doomed and tragic quality to it that makes it more gripping and intense. He has his own issues and worries, and it’s not all about Sera, there are also moments about him and his problems, and he has his own character arc. Like Sera, he matured, and he and Sera’s characters are the strength of this series. We can’t get enough of him. We could really go on and on – but we’ll leave it up to you to find out more.

Also, special shout-out to Nektas and Reaver. These two adorable, wholesome draken deserve the world and every happiness it has to offer because no one is as good as them!

The characters truly are the highlight of this sequel, and it is more slow-paced than other books in the series.

Princess Seraphena “Sera” Mierel stares at her reflection in the Shadow Temple, trying to calm her nerves. As her mother, Queen Calliphe of Lasania, approaches, Sera notes that she looks like her late father, and nothing like her mother. Sera has been treated like a Chosen her whole life, even though she is not one. She is the Maiden. Tonight is her 17th birthday, and she is to become the Primal of Death’s Consort.

Her step-brother, Tavius, enters the room. It is clear that he and Sera are not close, nor do they like each other very much. Since the people of Lasania do not know of her existence, Tavius became the heir to the crown.

The Queen’s trusted Lady, Lady Kala, enters, announcing that the Priests expect the Primal’s arrival soon. Lady Kala leads Sera through the winding halls of the Temple. Two Shadow Priests open doors for the Lady and Sera. Upon walking back from the port, Sera sees a goddess kill a man behind a townhouse. A god walks out of the house carrying a baby, whom he tosses onto the ground next to the dead man. Sera begins to walk towards the gods to confront them but then a hand clamps her mouth shut as an arm folds around her waist. A male voice warns her not to make a sound.

The man leads her away from the house into a nearby tunnel. Sera looks at him and thinks to herself that he might be the most stunning man she had ever laid eyes on. After studying his eyes, she realizes that he is a god. He says that the other gods are coming and tells her to wrap her legs around his waist and to kiss him. Sera reluctantly agrees because she knows that it is the only way to go unnoticed. Sera asks why he stopped her from going after the other gods and he tells her that he is not like them. He says that she should go home. As she is walking away, she gets a feeling that she shouldn’t walk away from him.

Sera asks why the god cares about the murders. The god tells her that murders similar to these have happened before: at least four in the last month. He admits that one of those who were killed was his friend. Sera tells him to get on with killing her and he tells her that that thought hadn’t once crossed his mind. The god tells her to be careful and that he will be watching her, then disappears.

Sera is sparring with Sir Braylon Holland. She blindly throws a dagger at a dummy and Braylon tells her she needs to work on her aim. He reprimands her about running wild about the capitol and Sera recalls that in the past three years, there have been two instances where someone found out who she was and attempted to kidnap her. She believes that Tavius had been behind the rumors. The two speak about how Sera punched the Prince because he had a horse whipped and then begin talking about how Sera poisoned Tavius’s fiancée so that she would fall ill and prevent Tavius’s ascension to the throne.

Our Review

We’re so happy to return to this beautifully crafted universe! The chemistry and development of Armentout’s characters is always so engaging. Not to mention the world-building. We love a prophecy! The foreshadowing of things we already know from the main series is so exciting, it’s kind of like reminiscing in its own way.

Sera and Nyktos are no Cas and Poppy – but hey, it’s the first novel, we need to give it some time. It is a reminiscent of the beloved Greek tale of Hades and Persephone yet Nyktos and Sera’s tale felt authentic as Blood and Ash is enriched with its own vivid mythology. There’s no doubt that this will be a wonderful love story upon its fruition!

The betrayals and the plot-twists will definitely leave you hooked! I ate this book. And as always, we are left with more questions than answers. It’s exciting to see how this series and the Blood and Ash series will merge and compliment each other! We can’t wait!

The characters are well-developed and memorable, and the chemistry between Poppy and Casteel is electric. Our Overview of Crown of Gilded Bones

Penellaphe has just destroyed the people at the temple, bringing in a contingent of Wolven, and the Royals. She is shocked by the proclamation of Queen Eloana that she, Poppy, is the true heir to the throne of Atlantia. Casteel attempts to make his way up to her to check if she is hurt.

A group of people led by Alistair, shoot down Casteel and Kieran, Casteel’s friend, and Wolven. Poppy, thinking they have died, lashes out with her powers but is kidnapped nonetheless.

While in captivity, Poppy finds out that Casteel is indeed alive and that the Captain of the Guard from Masadonia is a changeling. He was the one who took the face of Beckett, the young wolf-pup and took her to the temple right before she had been stoned and lost control of her powers. Captain Jansen had also killed Beckett. The initial plan is to take Poppy to a town in Solis and give her to Queen Ileana.

Before the exchange is made, Casteel and Kieran show up with their own army and try to rescue Poppy. Poppy takes a jagged arrow into her chest. Casteel decides to Ascend her in order to save her life despite it being forbidden.

Poppy wakes up several days later and almost eats Kieran before Casteel shows up. She isn’t a vampry, but they don’t know what she is. Alistair is not dead, he is being held captive so he doesn’t tell his mother what Casteel did. Shortly thereafter, they visit King Valyn. He relaxes when he sees Poppy isn’t a Vampry. Later that night, Alistair is executed.

Eventually, they travel to a city in Alantia where they meet up with the King and Queen. After Ascending, Poppy finds that her powers are much stronger. She then discovers that Poppy is the daughter of a deity. The Queen then reveals that they had amassed an army ready to attack Solis, and the only way out is for the King and Queen to stop it: Casteel and Poppy must become King and Queen if they want to stop it.

Poppy believes after meeting some people, that not every Vampry is bad and doesn’t want to start a war. After a long deliberation, Casteel and Poppy agree to take on the Crown of Atlantia.

They return to the capital city and tell King Valyn and Queen Eloana of their intentions. Poppy and Casteel are crowned: the first new crowns in four hundred years. Poppy and Casteel encourage the council to hold back the armies. Going into the tunnels to the way to Iliseum, Poppy has to use her powers to kill snakes and skeletons. Nytkos tells the dragon within the tunnel to watch Poppy’s friends while they talk. He tells her that he won’t help, but she already has everything she needs already.

The return to the castle. Poppy meets Gianna, the wolvern that was supposedly engaged to Casteel. Eventually they arrive to the city to meet the queen of Solis. After some mishaps, Queen Ileana arrives and tells Poppy the truth: She is her mother, not Coralena. The Queen reveals that her true name is Isbeth and was Malec’s heart-mate, and when he turned her, since he was a God, she became one. She demands Poppy pledge allegiance to her and settle as a Duchess in Atlantia.

Poppy refuses, and the Queen has Ian killed. All Hell breaks loose. Poppy and the Queen fight which leads Poppy unconscious. When she awakes, she discovers that Casteel was taken prisoner on her behalf.

Poppy returns to the capital city and confronts Eloana about the truth of Isbeth. The former Queen tells her that she didn’t know until Malec had told her the truth all those years ago when she entombed him. Poppy then goes into Iliseum with Kieran and speaks with the dragon-like changeling about her responsibilities. He agrees on behalf of his clan to help ber. He then reveals to her that Malec isn’t her father, but Malec’s twin.

They return to the city where they met with the Queen of Solis. Poppy asked for the Kingdom of Solis to send someone worthy of receiving the Queen of Atlantia, which turned out to be the King of Solis. She kills him, cuts off his head, and hurts the Revenant that they had left behind-telling them to take the King’s head to the Queen and deliver the message that Poppy is coming for them with fury.

Our Review of Crown of Gilded Bones

A truly amazing follow-up to the series!

There’s so much to gush about this novel! This instalment is, in our opinion, much more action-packed than the first. There’s tons of political and royal drama which had us on the edge of our seat the entire read. Not to mention the ending! Poppy really is in her girlboss era.

Poppy’s growth in the series has been remarkable, she comes to terms with some very difficult revelations of her identity and background and takes them head-on. Some may say that she takes it too well, in a way which is borderline inhuman – but we think this is intentional. As Poppy faces more news of her background, she takes it better and better, a reflection on how we discover that she isn’t human at all.

Ugh, and a moment to appreciate the relationship between Poppy and Casteel. They’re endlessly supportive of each other and Casteel getting imprisoned for the safety of Poppy is heartbreaking in the best way!

Overall, another excellent addition to the series. We can’t wait to read onto the next one!
