Our Review

Brandon Sanderson, once again, proves his mastery in creating rich and immersive worlds filled with complex characters and intriguing lore.

At the heart of this novella is Lift, a mischievous and street-smart young girl with a unique ability known as Awakening. Lift’s character is an absolute delight to follow; her witty banter, resourcefulness, and fierce independence make her stand out. Throughout the story, we go through a roller-coaster of emotions as Lift confronts her past, discovers her destiny, and begins to understand the true potential of her powers.

The plot is fast-paced and action-packed. You can tell, even without knowing the size of the book, that it is a novella. There are a lot more action scenes and a lot less tension-building than that which is present in the main books of the series.

Sanderson has this skill of effortlessly weaving personal struggles and challenges into stories without it feeling overbearing. Lift’s internal struggles and growth throughout the story were subtle enough to not feel like the focal point of the book, but important enough that by the end her change was palpable.

In addition to the captivating plot and strong character development, Edgedancer provides essential world-building elements that expand the scope of The Stormlight Archive series. Sanderson introduces intriguing concepts like the Lophiir and the ancient Knights Radiant, enriching the overall lore of Roshar.

However, as a novella, Edgedancer is relatively short, which might leave some fans craving for a more substantial narrative. While it fits neatly into the series, it could be seen as a brief interlude between the main novels. Nonetheless, the novella accomplishes what it sets out to do—fleshing out Lift’s character and her role in the grand tapestry of the series. Brandon isn’t one to leave his fans in the dark. He has given a lot of content to keep the fans well-fed even as the publication date is pushed back. As far as we can see, Sanderson has done five chapter/section readings at various conventions and on Youtube.

With the huge success of Fantasy series such as Game of Thrones, Vampire Diaries, and The Witcher, it is no surprise that Sanderson is next on Hollywood’s list. Whilst none of these claims are official, a Secret Project Kickstarter that was listed in the past only adds more fuel to the fire. Netflix was mentioned, and he went on in a later Reddit AMA that he aims to have a high-level of involvement and creative control over any possible adaptations.

We know that if an official deal hasn’t even been reached yet, it will be a long time before it hits our screens, so best stay focused on the books for now.

The End of the Cosmere?

This may slightly depress some readers, but we are nearing the halfway point. Many readers may have only just recently gotten introduced to Brandon Sanderson and his work, but the man already has the end in sight. For those who don’t know, the Cosmere is the fantastical universe he’s created for his stories. Book series that take place within this universe are Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive among others. When his career is over, this will likely be the superfranchise Sanderson will be known for.

As it turns out, Sanderson already has something of an endgame in sight.

“The last chronological book of the Cosmere Sequence is the final Mistborn book,” Sanderson said in a signing last month. “So the way that the structure works right now [is]: Elantris, Mistborn Era One, Stormlight Archive first five, Mistborn Era Two [and Three], Elantris 2 and 3, Stormlight Archive 6-10, then the final Mistborn Era.

“Era four of Mistborn will be the last chronologically,” Sanderson continued. “We will have the flashbacks to Dragonsteel after Stormlight 10 but before Era four of Mistborn. If I manage to get that all done before I die, then there’s a decent change I will write other Cosmere books…probably during this timeframe. Unconnected or only tangentially related. But I do intend that to be the final book of the Cosmere sequence and I have no plans for anything chronologically after that.”

If you’re a little confused, we don’t blame you. It seems that Stormlight Archive Book 5 will mark the halfway point of the Cosmere. It may be sad that this super-series is coming to an end, but it’s good that Sanderson has a plan, rather than some authors who seem to keep going until they’re flogging a dead horse.

Release Date

Sanderson is very transparent with the updates regarding his novels. Whilst it is planned to be released in November 2024, some have questioned if it will be released on time following push-backs of novellas.

However, we’re happy to say that as of June 2023, Sanderson announced in his Youtube Weekly Updates that the Stormlight Archive Book 5 is officially half-way done!

In the video, he says that he has been given a deadline of December 15 to send his draft to his publishers, and denoted that he is “worried it won’t be good enough”. He then denoted that if he is not happy or his editors are not happy, they will push the date back. However, he says that is not something that he is anticipating.

One commenter summed up our feelings rather well: ‘”A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is bad forever.” Delay the book if you’re not happy with it, because if you don’t we won’t be’

Rhythm of War is the fourth installment in the epic fantasy series “The Stormlight Archive” written by Brandon Sanderson. Set in the world of Roshar, the novel continues our favorite journey of the Knights Radiant and their struggle against ancient enemies.

The story picks up after the events of the third book, Oathbringer. If you haven’t read it, read about it here! The powerful Knights Radiant, led by Dalinar Kholin, successfully thwarted the forces of Odium, the malevolent god-like being seeking to dominate Roshar. However, the victory came at a great cost, leaving the world shaken and its inhabitants grappling with the aftermath.

Now the focus shifts to the character of Navani Kholin, Dalinar’s wife and a skilled scholar. As the war against Odium’s forces continues, Navani takes center stage as she delves into the mysteries of ancient technology called fabrials and attempts to unravel their secrets. Our Review

Rhythm of War contains some of the highest highs that ‘The Stormlight Archives’ has to offer but also falls victim to Sanderson humming excessively to the rhythms of indulgence and exposition as well as some lacklustre flashback chapters. Whilst we’re never one to turn down more Sanderson work, this novel is regarded by some as being a tad too long.

Sanderson did an excellent job of making the characters feel vulnerable and in genuine risk in this novel. We always want to truly worry for our characters, and in this novel we truly did. You know those books you crack open and forget you’re even reading? Rhythm of War graces us with one of those gems.

The portrayal of mental health themes in Rhythm of War is exceptionally well-crafted. A rarity in a genre that rarely delves into such topics. Brandon Sanderson’s dedication to researching and comprehending conditions like PTSD, depression, dissociative identity disorder, and autism spectrum disorder is evident. The narrative dedicates significant time to the beloved characters as they confront their personal struggles, with particular emphasis on Kaladin Stormblessed. It can be argued that the most poignant moments in the book revolve around him and his relentless battle against the darkness lurking within his own soul. The intensity of his pain resonates profoundly, evoking a strong desire for this fictional character to conquer his inner demons and ultimately find solace and happiness. The emotional impact of Kaladin’s journey is palpable, and we found ourselves drawn to him more than any other character as a result!

There were some scenes in which we felt a little overwhelmed with information that was presented quite quickly with little time for stewing. Whilst the theory on fabrials is interesting, at times it became a little repetitive. It didn’t really impact on our enjoyment – but for those who need a little time to take things in, you might want to prepare for these chapters!

Whilst it may be one of the weaker books in the series, Rhythm of War in and of itself is a wonderful piece of fiction. Sanderson has big boots to fill when he takes on writing another book in this series!

One of the amazing things about this series is its accessibility. Even though there are multiple plot lines, characters, and a huge magic system, it is written simply and easy to understand.

If you’ve read from Brandon Sanderson before; prepare to see the true extent of his writing abilities. This novel may very well rival George R.R Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series! Taking a turn away from convention, these novels are largely character-driven rather than plot-driven – which is all the more impressive considering the plot is thrilling. This book painting a true image of the human condition; life&death, love & hate, hope & despair.

Kaladin Stormblessed may be one of the most fleshed-out and well-written protagonists in the fantastic fantasy genre. With true feelings, realistic dialogue and revealing just enough information to understand the character’s condition, whilst still being intrigued!

If fantasy worlds are overwhelming, be not afraid. The world of Roshar is written with in-depth, yet plainly understood descriptions of everything one may need to imagine such a vast universe. Weather, history, politics, races, magic system, culture; there will be little to piece together yourself! Combined with simple and accessible writing plus maps, this world is addictively easy to become immersed in.

And yes! You heard us: MAPS!

Please note that this book is a slow-burner! The action doesn’t pick up until after the half-way mark. Considering this is a 1000-page novel, the 1/2 way mark is a novel in and of itself. But try not to be intimidated. We promise that despite its length – the book isn’t long enough! We were so thankful we had the sequel, Words of Radiance, on stand-by!
