Our Overview

We return to the epic saga with Geralt being hired by a powerful sorceress named Coral to retrieve a stolen artifact. The zephyr is a powerful magical device that can manipulate the weather. Geralt sets out on his quest, but things rarely go to plan in this world. He is ambushed by a group of bandits who steal the zephyr from him. He is then forced to retreat and regroup, but in doing so, he ends up getting caught up in a web of political intrigue and betrayal that spans multiple kingdoms.

Geralt teams up with a group of unlikely allies, including an elven warrior named Ihuarraquax, a bard named Dandelion, and a medic named Shani. Together they plan to track down the zephyr and uncover the truth behind its theft. In their journey, they meet plenty of formidable foes, resulting in a seemingly endless slew of battles.

As they journey across the land, Geralt and his companions become embroiled in a complex plot involving several powerful factions vying for control of the zephyr. These include a group of sorcerers led by Coral, who seek to use the device to further their own agendas, and a group of scientists who want to study its magical properties.

Geralt and his team are eventually able to retrieve the zephyr and prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. However, the adventure takes a toll on them all, and Geralt is left questioning his place in the world and the purpose of his never-ending quest for justice.

Our Review

The Witcher Wiki states that this standalone novel is a midquel, set before “The Witcher” short story but after most of the other stories in The Last Wish. We should state, however, that this novel feels more in-tune with the main series than the short stories.

Instead of character and point of view hopping which was introduced in Blood of Elves and continued up until The Lady of the Lake, we only follow Geralt’s actions here. This is with the exception of certain interludes which include letters, a story draft, and the happenings at an auction house. It was nice to have a change in perspective at this point of the series, but the interludes kept us really clued-in to what was happening in the world outside of Geralt’s perspective.

This novel is technically a standalone, but we would advise against reading this without reading the short story prequels at least. Personally, we like it nestled in within the main storyline and have labeled it as such.

It has all the things that we thoroughly enjoy about Sapkowski’s world: rich worldbuilding with historical allusions, modern themes raised in the medieval setting and a lonely path of a hero in a cynical world around him. Geralt’s morals are a strong candle in this novel, and he is tried seemingly at every corner.

This was an excellent addition to the series no matter how you read it! Although we don’t recommend it as a standalone, it definitely has its home as an introduction to the series, a nice mid-point break, or as a bitter-sweet farewell to the series. Its adaptability makes it an easy novel to fit into your reading schedule.

The book opens with Geralt being summoned by his former lover, Yennefer of Vengerberg, to the kingdom of Cintra. There, they are tasked with finding and protecting Ciri. Who is being hunted by the evil Nilfgaardian Empire.

As they travel, the trio learns more about Ciri’s powers and the Nilfgaardian Empire’s plan to use her for their own purposes. They also encounter a mysterious woman known as the Lady of the Lake, who offers to help them if they help her in return. Despite their reservations, they agree to the deal. They traverse em on a dangerous journey to a hidden island in the middle of a lake.

They soon discover that the Lady of the Lake is actually a powerful sorceress who has been trapped there for centuries by a curse. The sorceress reveals that she needs Ciri’s help to break the curse, as she is the only one with the power to do so. However, they soon discover that the curse has been placed by an even more powerful being known as Avallac’h, who seeks to use Ciri for his own nefarious purposes.

Geralt and his companions must fight against Avallac’h and his minions to protect Ciri and the Lady of the Lake. Through trials and battles, they learn that Ciri’s destiny is far greater than they ever imagined. She is the key to unlocking the secrets of the Elder Blood and the fate of the world.

In the end, Geralt and Yennefer are forced to make a difficult decision. They must choose between saving Ciri and fulfilling their promise to the Lady of the Lake, or letting her go to fulfill her destiny.

Our Review

Ciri has easily grown to become our favourite character. She is a complex and engaging protagonist who is easy to root for, and all of her scenes feel incredibly moving. We have seen her grow up in a way through the series. The Lady of the Lake is a mysterious and powerful sorceress who adds an extra layer of mythical twist to the story.

The writing in “The Lady of the Lake” is excellent. Andrzej Sapkowski’s prose is rich and evocative, and his descriptions of the world of the Witcher are vivid and immersive. The book is well-translated into English and is a joy to read – we find that the translators never get enough praise, but from what we have heard from Polish fans, the translators have done a magnificent job in carrying his wit and prose into English.

This novel was especially engaging, and we’re probably a little biased in saying it’s because Ciri is the protagonist. She’s so engaging & lovable in a way which we can’t quite connect to in a way with the likes of Geralt.

The story once again follows our beloved protagonist, Geralt of Rivia. He is tasked with rescuing Ciri, a powerful young woman who is also a witcher-in-training. Ciri has been trapped in the Tower of Swallows, a mysterious and ancient tower located in the land of Tir na Lia. The tower is said to be a gateway to other worlds, and many believe that whoever controls it, controls the fate of the world.

Geralt sets out on a journey to rescue Ciri, accompanied by his companions, the bard Dandelion and the druid Mousesack. Our Review

The Witcher series is always a favorite for us. We continue to hang onto Geralt as we watch how his character develops as well as the relationships between him and Ciri. The bond the two have is especially heartwarming. As we have grown with the characters, we truly feel the peril that Ciri is in, and we were on the edge of our seats.

This is in part thanks to Andrew’s exceptional writing. He truly is a king of his craft, a talent which shines through across languages thanks to the wonderfully talented translators.

The shocking revelations about the tower truly took us by surprise, but now that we think about it, it truly wasn’t entirely out of left field and further proves that the author is truly deeply talented in his craft!

We will always encourage fantasy lovers to read this series, especially with hit series and a legendary game series sprouting from the novel series!

The story picks up after the events of The Time of Contempt, with Geralt, the witcher, recovering from the injuries he sustained in his battle with the dragon. He is taken in by a group of dwarves, who nurse him back to health and help him regain his strength.

Baptism of Fire by Andrzej Sapkowski is a thrilling and action-packed addition to the series. This book continues to deliver on the series’ promise of a fast-paced and exciting fantasy story, while also continously delving deeper into the characters and the world they inhabit.

The book follows our favorite morally-gray hero Geralt, the witcher, as he sets out on a journey to uncover the truth about a dark and ominous future that he has been dreaming about. Along the way, he meets a diverse cast of characters. Each have their own unique backstory and motivations, and encounters challenges that test his skills. The characters we meet are truly interesting and varied, really hits the mark on the Fantasy genre without being over-the-top or overdone.

The book also explores the relationship between Geralt and Ciri, the young woman who is bound to him by destiny, and the impact that their relationship has on both of them. This adds an emotional depth to the story. We can’t get enough of their dynamic, and you’ll know that it’s one of our favorite aspects of the novel.

The writing is top-notch, as always. Sapkowski’s ability to create a rich and detailed fantasy world that is both believable and immersive. The pacing is spot on, and the action sequences are executed perfectly. We were biting our nails, on the edge of our seats, and screaming at the novel in places!

Overall, “Baptism of Fire” is a great continuation of the “The Witcher” series. Undoubtably this is a must-read for fans of the series and fantasy literature in general.

In The Time of Contempt, witcher Geralt of Rivia is embroiled in the politics of the Northern Kingdoms as the powerful Nilfgaardian Empire invades the continent. As the kingdoms scramble to form alliances and prepare for war, Geralt finds himself caught in the middle, with old friends and enemies pulling him in different directions.

Geralt is initially summoned by King Foltest of Temeria to help deal with a rebellion led by his own illegitimate son. However, the rebellion is quickly quashed by the Nilfgaardian army, and the kingdom is occupied. Foltest, who was injured in the fighting, is held prisoner in Nilfgaard, while Temeria is left leaderless and under the control of the empire.

Meanwhile, Geralt’s adopted daughter, Ciri, is being trained by the sorceress Yennefer to harness her magical powers. However, Ciri’s destiny is tied to the fate of the continent, and both Nilfgaard and the Northern Kingdoms see her as a valuable asset in the upcoming war. As Geralt races to protect Ciri, he must also confront his own past and the consequences of his actions in the previous novel.

As the political situation in the Northern Kingdoms becomes increasingly dire, Geralt and his friends must make difficult choices and confront the harsh realities of war and power. Ultimately, the novel ends on a cliffhanger. We won’t go into details (this is a spoiler-free zone, people!).

Our Review

One of the strongest aspects of the novel is its exploration of the blurred lines between good and evil. It’s one of the things author Sapkowski does especially well. There is a huge amount of moral ambiguity in the main characters. The characters in the book are not simply black and white, but instead are complex individuals with their own motivations and beliefs. Geralt, the witcher protagonist, is a perfect example of this complexity, as he struggles with his own past actions and tries to navigate the political landscape of the continent. We found some aspects of Geralt more likeable than others, and it’s hard to 100% back him without addressing first some of the bad things he has done, making a complex read.

The plot of the novel is especially well-crafted, with a number of twists and turns that kept us on our toes. The pacing is well-balanced, with plenty of action and tension, but also moments of quiet contemplation. The book also does a great job of building upon the events of the first novel and setting the stage for the events to come in the series.

One of the highlights of the book is the relationship between Geralt and Ciri, his adopted daughter. The bond between the two of them is a central theme of the novel and is portrayed with a great deal of nuance and depth. It warms our heart to see a male main protagonist with such a close relationship with his daughter. It’s been a popular motif from the 2010’s, and only seems to be gaining reactions. Think The Last of Us, or The Walking Dead Game. Only this novel was ahead of the times for this theme by about 20 years!

“The Blood of Elves” is the first novel in the “Witcher” series by Andrzej Sapkowski and it is a fantastic start to this series. The story is set in a richly-detailed fantasy world, filled with political intrigue, magic, and monsters. The main character, Geralt of Rivia, is a witcher, a mutant monster hunter, and he is a fascinating and complex character. It’s too easy to see why a fully fledged game and show were able to be adapted from the novels without feeling repetitive.

The story is fast-paced and action-packed, with plenty of thrilling battles against monsters and political intrigue. Sapkowski is known for delivering the novels with a unique twist of Polish wit, and the sentiment isn’t lost even amongst the gritty battles and political strife.

“Sword of Destiny” is a short story collection by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski (translated by David French), set in the same world as his “Witcher” series of novels. The stories follow our favorite heartthrob Geralt of Rivia, a mutated monster hunter.

One of the main stories in “Sword of Destiny” is “The Bounds of Reason,” in which the king of a neighboring kingdom hires Geralt to protect his daughter from a monster. The princess, Cirilla, is being pursued by the Nilfgaardian Empire, which believes she has magical powers that could help them conquer the world. Geralt must help Cirilla evade the Nilfgaardians and uncover the true nature of her powers. All the while, love is blooming.

Another key story in the collection is “A Shard of Ice,” in which Geralt is hired by a group of dwarves to investigate a mysterious creature that has been attacking their mine.

Our Review

We recently had the pleasure of reading “Sword of Destiny” and were happy to return to Sapkowski’s exceptional writing and world-building skills. The collection of short stories follows the witcher Geralt of Rivia as he travels through the continent of The Witcher.

One of the things we particularly appreciated about “Sword of Destiny” was the way it explored themes of love, loyalty, and the consequences of our actions in a thought-provoking and meaningful way. Geralt is more than just the pretty face we see in the Netflix adaption. He is a deeply complex and flawed character. His struggles to reconcile his own desires with his duties as a witcher made for a highly satisfying read.

Overall, we highly recommend “Sword of Destiny” to fans of fantasy literature. It is a superbly written and engaging collection of stories that will keep you thoroughly captivated until the very end. This book is a must-read for all fantasy enthusiasts, especially those wanting to delve into The Witcher series with a little build-up.
