This is a military 3D sci fi action film. This is a big screen large scale thriller that landed on Netflix in 2016 that is definitely worth a shot!

iBoy

Starring: Bill Milner, Maisie Williams, Rory Kinnear

When shards of a cell phone get lodged in a teenager’s brain, he discovers he can control electronic devices and uses his newfound power for revenge.

This is a science-fiction teen superhero action-thriller film and it is based on the 2010 novel of the same name from Kevin Brooks. Reviews were a little mixed on release but the actors performances were praised, particularly Maisie Williams.

The Discovery

Starring: Jason Segel, Rooney Mara, Robert Redford

A scientist whose proof of an afterlife caused a rash of suicides forges ahead with his research, while his disapproving son falls for a troubled woman.

This is a sci fi thriller with some romance thrown in. Reviews were mixed for this title, stating that it doesn’t quite live up to its premise but it is still worth a watch, especially if you like a little romance with your sci fi.

BLAME!

Inside a vast, self-replicating city bent on eliminating all life, mysterious loner Killy emerges to guide a remnant of humanity desperate to survive.

This is CGI anime science fiction action film. It is based on the manga series of the same name, written and illustrated by Tsutomu Nihei. Regarded as being faithful to its source material this is a must watch whether you are a fan of the manga or not!

Another straight to Netflix release this sci fi action thriller didn’t receive the best reviews but the cast put in a stellar performance so it’s worth a shot!

This is a sci fi thriller Netflix original starring Gary Oldman as Tau.

The Cloverfield Paradox

Starring: Gugu Mbatha-Raw, David Oyelowo, Daniel Brühl

Orbiting above a planet on the brink of war, scientists test a device to solve an energy crisis and end up face-to-face with a dark alternate reality.

This sci fi horror is the third movie in the Cloverfield franchise. But in space. The film hasn’t received the best of reviews compared to the first two movies in the series but if you want to continue the Cloverfield story then stream this one!

Mute

Starring: Alexander Skarsgård, Paul Rudd, Justin Theroux

When his girlfriend vanishes, a mute man ventures into a near-future Berlin’s seamy underworld, where his actions speak louder than words.

This is a neo noir science fiction film directed by Duncan Jones. The movie is worth watching for the score alone, composed by Clint Mansell, even if the critics haven’t been too kind!

Extinction

Starring: Michael Peña, Lizzy Caplan, Israel Broussard

Plagued by dreams of an alien invasion, a family man faces his worst nightmare when an extraterrestrial force begins exterminating Earth’s inhabitants.

This movie was originally scheduled for a theatrical release but it was pulled at the last minute and Netflix scooped up the rights. This is an alien invasion movie that is worth a stream.

The App

This sci fi movie received many positive critical reviews and was loved by viewers. It was also nominated for many independant movie awards. And it features Michael J Fox’s last movie appearance before his retirement. A must watch!

A World Without

The futuristic action thriller was first released direct to Netflix in January 2021 and it was the most watched movie on the platform on it’s opening weekend. Don’t miss this one!

Don’t Look Up

This big budget Netflix Original is a must watch commentary on modern times. Amazing performances from Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. Definitely makes you think that something like this could really happen!

Oxygen

After waking up in a cryogenic unit, Liz fights to survive and remember who she is before her oxygen runs out.

This is a French language sci fi thriller with Anne Hathaway serving as a producer. It is a claustrophobic white knuckle thriller that premiered on Netflix in May of last year. With the majority of reviews being favorable this is definitely one to stream!

Awake

Starring: Gina Rodriguez, Ariana Greenblatt, Frances Fisher

After a global event wipes out humanity’s ability to sleep, a troubled ex-soldier fights to save her family as society and her mind spiral into chaos.

This movie premiered on Netflix in June last year and reached number one worldwide in the week of it’s release. Even so, this disaster movie didn’t receive the best reviews but it is still worth a watch!

Space Sweepers

Starring: Song Joong-ki, Kim Tae-ri, Jin Sun-kyu

Chasing after space debris and faraway dreams in year 2092, four misfits unearth explosive secrets during the attempted trade of a wide-eyed humanoid.

This is a Korean movie, the theme is heavy on the criticism of capitalism. But despite the serious theme Robot Bubs brings some lightheartedness this can also be something of a fun watch. On it’s release this movie debuted at number one on Netflix in 16 countries and it dominated the top tens in over 80 countries. This is one you definitely don’t want to miss!

Big Bug

Starring: Elsa Zylberstein, Isabelle Nanty, Stéphane De Groodt

Humans have ceded most tasks to AI in 2045, even in nostalgic Alice’s home. So when robots stage a coup, her androids protectively lock her doors.

This is a French sci fi comedy that was released on Netflix on February 11 2022. Reviews are mixed at the moment but as the movie is so fresh its definitely worth you checking it out for yourself, especially if you like some comedy with your sci fi.

The Adam Project

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner

After accidentally crash-landing in 2022, time-traveling fighter pilot Adam Reed teams up with his 12-year-old self on a mission to save the future.

This is an upcoming sci fi movie that will be released on Netflix on March 11 2022. Obviously we don’t know much about this one as yet but it is a hotly anticipated title, starring the amazing Ryan Reynolds this is certainly one to look forward to!

Stranger Things

When a young boy vanishes, a small town uncovers a mystery involving secret experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one strange little girl.

Starring: Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard

There are currently 3 series available of this smash hit sci fi horror drama set in the 1980s. Since its release the series has attracted record breaking viewing figures on Netflix and has grown a huge international fan base. Series 4 is releasing later this year. It will be split into two Volumes, one being out on May 27 and the second one releasing on July 1. A fifth and final season has also been confirmed. So if you haven’t yet seen this amazing show (we most definitely recommend it!) then you had better get catching up before season 3 lands)!

This Brazilian dystopian sci fi thriller is now complete and it runs for four seasons so you can binge the whole show at once! This show has been something of a surprise hit and this is mostly because of the strong characterizations. So this is a Netflix show not to miss!

Lost In Space

After crash-landing on an alien planet, the Robinson family fights against all odds to survive and escape. But they’re surrounded by hidden dangers.

Starring: Molly Parker, Toby Stephens, Maxwell Jenkins

This show is a reboot of the original show of the same title from 1965. This is another show that is fully complete with the fourth season being released in December 2021. Considering the 1965 show has become much beloved that left this new show with a lot to live up to. But it has matched expectations and has been praised for having enough action scenes to keep sci fi fans happy but with an emotional anchor to weigh it down. So whether or not you are a fan of the original this show deserves a watch!

Another Life

After a massive alien artifact lands on Earth, Niko Breckinridge leads an interstellar mission to track down its source and make first contact.

Starring: Katee Sackhoff, Justin Chatwin, Samuel Anderson

This science fiction drama aired for two seasons but very sadly it has recently been announced that season 3 has been cancelled. The show is said to lack the spark required to set it apart from other sci fi shows. But if you have exhausted everything else on this list then this will still be worth a watch!

Jupiter’s Legacy

They’re the first generation of superheroes. But as they pass the torch to their children, tensions are rising — and the old rules no longer apply.

Starring: Josh Duhamel, Ben Daniels, Leslie Bibb

This superhero drama released on Netflix in May 2021 and it is based on the comic book of the same name by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely. There is plenty of action to be had here but the narrative has been described as too slow. Sadly Jupiter’s Legacy was cancelled after on season but if you like a bit of superhero action then give this one a shot!

Into The Night

Passengers and crew aboard a hijacked overnight flight scramble to outrace the sun as a mysterious cosmic event wreaks havoc on the world below.

Starring: Pauline Etienne, Laurent Capelluto, Mehmet Kurtuluş

This is a Belgian apocalyptic sci-fi drama thriller based on the book The Old Axolotl by Jacek Dukaj. Netflix renewed the show for a second season which aired in 2021 and a Turkish language spin-off is due out this year. This series has been well received and it should be on your watchlist!

Dark

A missing child sets four families on a frantic hunt for answers as they unearth a mind-bending mystery that spans three generations.

Starring: Louis Hofmann, Oliver Masucci, Jördis Triebel

This is the first German language series to air on Netflix and it ran for three seasons through to its completion in 2021. The series has received universal critical acclaim. It’s characters, narrative, acting, tone and the musical score all all amazing! This is a very complex show though so it does take some concentration as it weaves through the timelines. We can’t give this show enough praise, this is a must watch!

Away

Commander Emma Green leaves behind her husband and daughter to lead an international crew of astronauts on a perilous three-year mission to a Mars space station.

Starring: Hilary Swank, Josh Charles, Vivian Wu

This sci fi drama aired in 2020 and unfortunately was cancelled after only one season. Reviews were mixed for this show but if the idea of a Mars mission appeals to you then this may be the show for you!

Altered Carbon

After 250 years on ice, a prisoner returns to life in a new body with one chance to win his freedom: by solving a mind-bending murder.

Starring: Anthony Mackie, Lela Loren, Simone Missick

This cyberpunk series is based on the book of the same name by Richard K. Morgan. After the first season a second series was quickly confirmed. But despite the show receiving mostly positive reviews the third season was cancelled. Despite this then it is still definitely worth watching the two season that have been made of this amazing book adaption.

Tribes Of Europa

In post-apocalyptic Europe, amid wars among microstates, three siblings fight for survival as a greater threat looms over the continent.

Starring:Henriette Confurius,Emilio Sakraya,David Ali Rashed

This is a German language sci fi show that first aired on Netflix in February 2021. The series has received mostly good reviews, with its captivating storyline been given most praise. Also the show ended on a major cliffhanger and a second series hasn’t been confirmed or denied as yet. So it looks like we are going to be left hanging for a little longer yet!

Alice In Borderland

An aimless gamer and his two friends find themselves in a parallel Tokyo, where they’re forced to compete in a series of sadistic games to survive.

Starring: Kento Yamazaki, Tao Tsuchiya, Nijiro Murakami

This is a Japanese language sci fi thriller drama based on the Manga of the same name by Haro Aso. It premiered in December 2020 and the response was overwhelmingly positive with the acting, visuals and graphic violence particularly receiving acknowledgement. It took only two weeks for season two to be confirmed and it should (hopefully!) be out later this year. We loved this show at Reign Of Reads and we can’t recommend it enough! Watch it now!

Cowboy Bebop (live action)

Long on style and perpetually short on cash, bounty hunters Spike, Jet and Faye trawl the solar system looking for jobs. But can they outrun Spike’s past?

Starring: John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, Daniella Pineda

This is a live action remake of the much beloved anime of the same name. The show was criticised for most things but its acting performances were highly praised. The series was then cancelled after only one season. There was a lot to live up to here as the Cowboy Bebop anime was so amazing this couldn’t help but fall short. It is still worth a watch though whether you are a fan of the anime or not.

Black Mirror

This sci-fi anthology series explores a twisted, high-tech near-future where humanity’s greatest innovations and darkest instincts collide.

Starring: Jesse Plemons, Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson

This character driven anthology series runs for 22 episodes across 5 series. The series uses speculative fiction to comment on contemporary social issues. It has also received widespread critical acclaim and is regarded to be one of the best TV series of the 2010s.

Love Death + Robots

Terrifying creatures, wicked surprises and dark comedy converge in this NSFW anthology of animated stories presented by Tim Miller and David Fincher.

Starring: Michael B. Jordan, Elodie Yung, Joe Dempsie

This is an animated adult anthology series. There are currently two seasons available to watch with the third season being released sometime in 2022. Both season so far have been very well received. The episodes are quite short and bite sized therefore you can probably binge the whole series so far very quickly!

Sense 8

From the creators of “The Matrix” and “Babylon 5” comes this tense series in which eight people can telepathically experience each other’s lives.

Starring: Tuppence Middleton, Brian J. Smith, Bae Doona

This is a science fiction drama streaming television series created by Lana and Lilly Wachowski. This series ran for two seasons before being cancelled by Netflix. Of course this was a huge disappointment as season two ended on a cliffhanger with the expectation that there would be a third season. However as so many people were unsatisfied with how it ended Netflix agreed to produce a two and a half hour season finale to bring the show to a much deserved ending. Also this series has received praise for its representation of LGBTQ characters and themes

Biohackers

A medical student enters a top German university on a secret mission to uncover a conspiracy linking a family tragedy to a visionary biology professor.

Starring: Luna Wedler, Jessica Schwarz, Benno Fürmann

This is a German language sci fi techno thriller which currently has two seasons, but a third has neither been confirmed nor denied at the moment. This series has had mostly positive reviews and has also been praised for its scientific accuracy. So if you are looking for a smart thriller but still with plenty of action then check this one out!

Squid Game

This Korean survival drama was a massive hit upon its release on Netflix in 2021. This series launched to critical acclaim and international interest. There is one series available now and a second is in the pipeline. This show does contain brutal violence but underlined with sharp social commentary. There are some very emotional scenes too amidst the action and violence. If you somehow didn’t get caught up in the Squid Game frenzy upon its release then you need to catch this now! Absolutely a must watch!

Umbrella Academy

Reunited by their father’s death, estranged siblings with extraordinary powers uncover shocking family secrets — and a looming threat to humanity.

This is a superhero TV series based on the graphic novels of the same name from Gerard Way (of My Chemical Romance fame). There are two seasons available right now with the third season out later this year. The show has been immensely popular in both viewing figures and with fans. It’s a fun show but with plenty of emotion and heart. So we can’t recommend this enough!

Star Trek The Next Generation

This sci fi series aired 1987 to 1994 with 178 episodes over seven seasons. This is the third series in the Star Trek TV series franchise. The show has been immensely popular and the series finale had a viewership of 30 million. So whether you are a Star Trek fan or not then give this series a watch!

Welcome To Eden

A group of young adults attend a party on a remote island, but the tempting paradise they find waiting for them holds dangerous secrets and entrapments.

This is a new Spanish language show to Netflix. Set on an idyllic island where everything is not as it seems, this series ended on a cliff hanger so we are still waiting to see if it’s going to be renewed for a second season!

The film was a hit with critics, although these has been some criticism. The movie has been nominated for and won a huge numbers of film awards so whether you have seen anything in the Blackmirror series or not this is still definitely worth a watch!

Mute (2018)

When his girlfriend vanishes, a mute man ventures into a near-future Berlin’s seamy underworld, where his actions speak louder than words.

This is a neo noir science fiction film directed by Duncan Jones. The movie is worth watching for the score alone, composed by Clint Mansell, even if the critics haven’t been too kind!

Project Power (2019)

Starring: Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dominique Fishback

An ex-soldier, a teen and a cop collide in New Orleans as they hunt for the source behind a dangerous new pill that grants users temporary superpowers.

This one is a futuristic superhero movie that was released straight to Netflix in August 2020. For the first two weekends after it’s premiere it was the top streamed movie on Netflix. With critics praising the acting this is a fun thriller that is worth a stream!

America: The Motion Picture (2021)

Starring: Channing Tatum, Jason Mantzoukas, Olivia Munn

A chainsaw-wielding George Washington teams with beer-loving bro Sam Adams to take down the Brits in a tongue-in-cheek riff on the American Revolution.

This is an adult animated sci fi comedy which is a Netflix original movie. It is something of a controversial movie which opinions divided but if you are looking for something more lighthearted then this may be your thing!

Tau (2018)

Kidnapped by an inventor who uses her as a test subject to perfect his robotic AI, a street-smart young woman tries to escape her high-tech prison.

This is a sci fi thriller Netflix original starring Gary Oldman as Tau.

Rim Of The World (2019)

Starring: Jack Gore, Miya Cech, Benjamin Flores Jr.

Stranded at a summer camp when aliens attack the planet, four teens with nothing in common embark on a perilous mission to save the world.

This sci fi adventure movie is a modern take on the 80s kid centered action films. Although it may fall short of some of the 80s classics it is still worth a watch!

The Silence (2019)

With the world under attack by deadly creatures who hunt by sound, a teen and her family seek refuge outside the city and encounter a mysterious cult.

This is a sci fi horror based on the book of the same name from Tim Lebbon. It has been compared to 2018 movie A Quiet Place so if you enjoyed that movie then catch this one too!

Okja (2017)

Starring: Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, An Seo Hyun

A gentle giant and the young girl who raised her are caught in the crossfire between animal activism, corporate greed and scientific ethics.

This is an action adventure film directed by Parasite director Bong Joon Ho. This movie has garnered huge critical acclaim and was named New York Times’s ten most influential films of the decade in November 2019. Definitely one not to miss!

Anon (2018)

This is a sci fi thriller which has been described as slightly predictable but if you’ve exhausted everything else on this list then go for it!

The Titan (2021)

On a bleak future Earth, a soldier endures a radical genetic transformation to save humanity. But his wife fears he’s becoming more creature than man.

This is a futuristic dystopian thriller from Netflix about colonizing the moon. While not critically lauded it’s still worth a shot!

Starship Troopers (1997)

In the distant future, Earth is at war with a race of giant alien insects. Little is known about the Bugs except that they are intent on the eradication of all human life. The Bugs are a ruthless enemy with only one mission: survival of their species no matter what the cost.

Starship Troopers is a military science fiction action film It is directed by Paul Verhoeven and is based on the novel of the same name by Robert A. Heinlein’s. This is the only movie in the Starship Troopers franchise to get a theatrical release. Initially the movie received negative reviews, however it has aged well and the response over time has become more positive with the movie being praised for its political satire.

The Adam Project

After accidentally crash-landing in 2022, time-traveling fighter pilot Adam Reed teams up with his 12-year-old self on a mission to save the future.

This time travel adventure starring Ryan Reynolds is a fun action movie with all the usual charm that Ryan Reynolds usually brings to a movie.

War Of The Worlds

Starring: Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Justin Chatwin and Miranda Otto

Dockworker Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) struggles to build a positive relationship with his two children, Rachel and Robbie. When his ex-wife, Mary Ann (Miranda Otto), drops them off at Ferrier’s house, it seems as though it will be just another tension-filled weekend. However, when electromagnetic pulses of lightning strike the area, the strange event turns out to be the beginning of an alien invasion, and Ferrier must now protect his children as they seek refuge.

This is a big budget remake of HG Wells classic novel of the same name, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise.

Alien (1979)

In deep space, the crew of the commercial starship Nostromo is awakened from their cryo-sleep capsules halfway through their journey home to investigate a distress call from an alien vessel. The terror begins when they encounter a nest of eggs inside the ship.

This is a well known sci fi horror directed by Ridley Scott and starring Sigourney Weaver as Agent Ellen Ripley. Initially the movie was met with mixed reviews but it was a huge box office success and won a plethora of awards. It has since become a much loved classic and has spawned a whole franchise of further films, novels, comic books, video games, and toys. If somehow you have never watched Alien then rectify that immediately!

Cloverfield (2008)

As a group of New Yorkers enjoy a going-away party, little do they know that they will soon face the most terrifying night of their lives. As a creature the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city, death and destruction is left in its wake.

Cloverfield is a found footage sci fi movie, it was a huge success on its release and has since spawned a Cloverfield franchise, with two further movies. A direct sequel is also on the way, currently in development.

Us (2019)

With her husband, son and daughter, Adelaide Wilson returns to the beachfront home where she grew up as a child. And she becomes increasingly concerned that something bad is going to happen. Her worst fears soon become a reality when four masked strangers descend upon the house.

This sci fi horror is directed by Jordan Peele. Upon its release the movie was a box office hit and critically it was very successful too. The direction, score and performance of Lupita Nyong’o were singled out for praise. This is a creepy, must watch movie!

Attack The Block (2011)

A group of valiant teenagers ventures out to battle a savage alien incursion. With the invasive species jeopardising their vicinity in Southern London, they fight to succeed in their mission.

This is a comedy sci fi horror. Although it underperformed at the box office it was critically acclaimed, particularly the score, direction and the performance of John Boyega. A sequel is currently in development.

The Invisible Man (2020)

After staging his own suicide, a crazed scientist uses his power to become invisible to stalk and terrorize his ex-girlfriend. When the police refuse to believe her story, she decides to take matters into her own hands and fight back.

This sci fi horror is inspired by the HG Wells classic of the same name. This movie was released to critical praise, especially for the performance of Elisabeth Moss. It got off to a very good start at the box office before it was struck by closures due to the Covid- 19 pandemic. This is regarded as a smart and scary sci fi horror and it is definitely one not to miss!

Cube (1998)

Without remembering how they got there, several strangers awaken in a prison of cubic cells. There’s onetime cop Quentin, scientist Holloway, young math genius Leaven, master of escapes Rennes, autistic savant Kazan and architect Worth, who might have more information on the maze than he lets on. The prisoners must use their combined skills if they are to escape.

This is an independent science fiction horror that has gathered a cult following. It is best known for its surreal atmosphere and further films followed its release. Reminiscent of The Twilight Zone this is an indie cult classic that shouldn’t be missed!

Scanners (1981)

Scanners are men and women born with incredible telepathic and telekinetic powers. There are many who exercise the benefits of their special gifts in a safe and judicious manner. However, there is a group of renegade scanners who plan to create a race that will rule the world.

This movie didn’t have the best reception on its release but has gone on to be evaluated to cult classic status. This is a must watch 80s classic!

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1956)

In California, Dr. Miles Bennell is baffled when all his patients come to him with the same complaint: their loved ones seem to have been replaced by emotionless impostors. Despite others’ dismissive denials, Dr. Bennell, his former girlfriend Becky and his friend Jack soon discover that the patients’ suspicions are true.

This sci fi horror is based on the novel of the same name by author Jack Finney and stars Donald Sutherland. This movie is regarded as being culturally and historically significant and even brought us the term “pod people”. This is a must watch film noir classic!

28 Days Later (2002)

A group of misguided animal rights activists free a caged chimp infected with the Rage virus from a medical research lab. When London bike courier Jim wakes up from a coma a month after, he finds his city all but deserted. On the run from the zombie-like victims of the Rage, Jim stumbles upon a group of survivors and joins them on a perilous journey to what he hopes will be safety.

This zombie horror movie was released to widespread critical acclaim, especially for the direction by Danny Boyle, the acting performance, the atmosphere, screenplay and soundtrack. Two more movies followed, along with a graphic novel and comic book series. This film is regarded to have reinvigorated the zombie movie and is definitely one of the best in this genre out there!

A Quiet Place (2018)

If they hear you, they hunt you. A family must live in silence to avoid mysterious creatures that hunt by sound. Knowing that even the slightest whisper or footstep can bring death, Evelyn and Lee are determined to find a way to protect their children while desperately searching for a way to fight back.

This is a post apocalyptic movie from 2018. It was a huge box office success and was also loved by critics. It has been described by the review site Rotten Tomatoes as “smart, wickedly frightening good time”. A sequel followed in 2021. A must watch!

Happy Death Day (2017)

Tree Gelbman wakes up on her birthday in the bed of a student named Carter. When a masked killer suddenly takes her life in a brutal attack, she once again magically wakes up in Carter’s dorm room unharmed. Now, the frightened young woman must relive the same day over and over until she figures out who murdered her.

This is a black comedy slasher film has been described as “Groundhog day meets scream”. Whilst the film has a familiar premise it is done in an entertaining way. The movie grossed $125 million worldwide on a $4.8 million budget so it was a huge financial success. A sequel was released in 2019. So if you prefer your sci fi horror with a bit of comedy thrown in then this is the movie for you!

The Mist (2007)

After a powerful storm damages their Maine home, David Drayton and his young son head into town to gather food and supplies. Soon afterward, a thick fog rolls in and engulfs the town, trapping the Draytons and others in the grocery store. Terror mounts as deadly creatures reveal themselves outside, but that may be nothing compared to the threat within, where a zealot calls for a sacrifice.

This sci fi horror is based on Stephen King’s novella of the same name. This movie was both a commercial and critical success and as book to movie adaptions go this is one of the best. Give it a watch!

Slither (2006)

Wheelsy is a small town where not much happens and everyone minds his own business. No one notices when evil slips in quietly but, when people find mutilated livestock and a woman goes missing, Sheriff Bill Pardy discovers an alien organism that threatens to devour all life on Earth.

This is a science-fiction black comedy body horror film. James Gunn wrote and directed the movie in his directorial debut. The movie was a huge box office failure but it did receive positive reviews. It has since picked up a huge following and is now a cult classic.

The Thing (1982)

In remote Antarctica, a group of American research scientists are disturbed at their base camp by a helicopter shooting at a sled dog. When they take in the dog, it brutally attacks both humans and canines in the camp. And they discover that the beast can assume the shape of its victims. Now, a helicopter pilot and the camp doctor lead the camp crew in a desperate battle against the vicious creature.

This is a sci fi horror movie directed by John Carpenter. On its theatrical release the movie was subject to mostly negative reviews but upon release to home video everything changed. The movie found a more appreciative audience and began to go down as a cult classic. It is now regarded as being on of the best science fiction and horror films ever made.

The Dead Zone (1984)

When Johnny Smith awakens from a coma caused by a car accident, he finds that years have passed and he now has psychic abilities. Heartbroken that his girlfriend has moved on with her life, Johnny also must contend with his unsettling powers, which allow him to see a person’s future with a mere touch. And after seeing danger in the future of an aspiring politician, Johnny resolves to kill him.

This sci fi thriller is based on the book of the same name from Stephen King. The movie was a hit with critics and Christopher Walken’s performance was particularly well received. At the time it was said to be one of the best big screen adaptions of a Stephen King book.

Predator (1987)

Dutch is a soldier of fortune and is hired by the U.S. government to secretly rescue a group of politicians trapped in Guatemala. But when Dutch and his team, which includes weapons expert Blain and CIA agent George, land in Central America, something is gravely wrong. After finding a string of dead bodies, the crew discovers they are being hunted by a brutal creature with superhuman strength and the ability to disappear into its surroundings.

This sci fi action horror was a huge success and spawned a franchise of Predator films, books, toys and games. It was the second highest box office taker in the year of its release and was hugely praised. Definitely one to watch!

Aliens (1986)

After floating in space for 57 years, Lt. Ripley’s shuttle is found by a deep space salvage team. Upon arriving at LV-426, the marines find only one survivor, a nine year old girl named Newt. But even these battle-hardened marines with all the latest weaponry are no match for the hundreds of aliens that have invaded the colony.

This sci fi horror action film from James Cameron is the sequel to 1979’s classic Alien. Regarded as being a worthy successor to the original Alien movie this is absolutely a must watch movie!

This sci fi horror is based on Colin Wilson’s book The Space Vampires. Unfortunately the movie received mostly negative reviews and was a bit of a bomb at the box office. But since then this movie has achieved cult status and isn’t one to miss!

The Fly (1986)

When scientist Seth Brundle completes his teleportation device, he decides to test its abilities on himself. Unbeknownst to him, a housefly slips in during the process, leading to a merger of man and insect. Initially, Brundle appears to have undergone a successful teleportation. But the fly’s cells begin to take over his body. As he becomes increasingly fly-like, Brundle’s girlfriend is horrified as the person she once loved deteriorates into a monster.

This sci fi horror is a remake of the 1958 film of the same name, directed and written by David Cronenberg. Starring Jeff Goldblum it was released to massive praise from critics and audiences alike. With Goldblum’s performance and the special effects receiving specific praise. If you have never seen this gem then don’t miss out!

This is a science fiction horror with an all star cast including Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan and Joely Richardson. The production was rushed on this movie (due to Paramount’s other blockbuster Titanic being projected not to meet its release date). Therefore the heavily edited release ended up being a box office and critical failure. It was only upon it’s DVD release that it began to garner a huge following making the cult classic it is today.

Terminator 2 (1992)

A cyborg, identical to the one who failed to kill Sarah Connor, must now protect her ten-year-old son John from a more advanced and powerful cyborg. Over 10 years have passed since the first machine called The Terminator tried to kill Sarah Connor and her unborn son, John.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a science fiction action film produced and directed by James Cameron with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton reprising their roles from the original movie. This movie is regarded as being even better than the first Terminator movie and being praised for its action scenes, action and visual effects. Other movies followed this one and in the words of the Terminator himself, “I’ll be back”.

This is a sci fi disaster film that was a huge box office success but was met with a mixed response from critics. However the movie was praised for having a more thoughtful tone than its counterparts in this genre. So if you prefer a deeper disaster movie then this may be your go to!

The movie hasn’t received the most favourable reviews but it is regarded as being some goofy fun. So if that’s what you are looking for then this is your movie!

Total Recall (1990)

Douglas Quaid is a bored construction worker in the year 2084 who dreams of visiting the colonized Mars. He visits a company that plants false memories in order to experience the thrill of Mars without having to travel there. But something goes wrong and Quaid discovers that his entire life is actually a false memory.

This sci fi action film is directed by Paul Verhoeven and stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone. It was a huge box office success, the fifth most commercially successful movies of the year. Critical reception was mixed but the movie was highly praised for its score and practical special effects. This is a must see movie!

The Matrix (1999)

The Matrix is a science fiction cyberpunk action film written and directed by the Wachowskis. It stars Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano. A huge commercial and critical success it has since spawned three sequels (the most recent being out just last year). The movie is credited with popularizing “bullet time” effects (we all know that scene, right?). This movie and the rest of the franchise are must watch movies!

Contact (1997)

But an incredible message is found hidden in the signal.

Contact is a science fiction drama film directed by Robert Zemeckis and stars Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey. It is based on the book of the same name by Carl Sagan. The movie was a huge box office hit and it also sent the book back to the top of the bestsellers lists. Critics also loved the movie and it was the winner of the Hugo Award for best dramatic presentation. So this is a must watch movie!

Gattaca (1997)

Vincent Freeman has always fantasized about traveling into outer space. But he is grounded by his status as a genetically inferior in-valid. He decides to fight his fate by purchasing the genes of Jerome Morrow and assumes his DNA identity. Then, his plans are complicated, when an investigation begins into the death of a Gattaca officer.

Gattaca is a sci fi dystopian movie starring Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke. This movie wasn’t a hit at the box office but it did get critics raving positively and has sparked some debates about human genetic engineering. So if you are looking for a more intelligent science fiction movie then this is the one for you!

Stargate (1994)

Stargate is a science fiction action movie starring Kurt Russell and James Spader. Upon its release this movie was a commercial success , it was praised for its story, characters and atmosphere. This movie also began the Stargate franchise which spawned further movies, tv spins offs and video games. This is a classic that needs to be watched!

The Fifth Element (1997)

In the 23rd century, a New York City cabbie, Korben Dallas, finds the fate of the world in his hands when Leeloo falls into his cab. Leeloo will need to combine with four other elements in order to keep the approaching Great Evil from destroying the world.

The Fifth Element is a sci fi action movie and it stars Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, and Milla Jovovich. Reactions to the movie were quite polarising but ultimately reviews were mostly positive. The movie won several awards, such as from the British Academy Film Awards, the César Awards, the Cannes Film Festival, and the Lumières Awards. Alternatively the movie also received nominations at the Golden Raspberry and Stinkers Bad Movie Awards. So the conclusion is that you need to watch this movie and make up your mind for yourself!

Independence Day (1996)

Flatliners is a sci fi psychological horror film directed by Joel Schumacher with an all star cast including Kiefer Sutherland and Julia Roberts. Whilst not as critically well received as others on this list this is still a different concept and definitely one to watch!

Terminator 2 (1992)

A cyborg, identical to the one who failed to kill Sarah Connor, must now protect her ten-year-old son John from a more advanced and powerful cyborg. Over 10 years have passed since the first machine called The Terminator tried to kill Sarah Connor and her unborn son, John.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a science fiction action film produced and directed by James Cameron with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton reprising their roles from the original movie. This movie is regarded as being even better than the first Terminator movie and being praised for its action scenes, action and visual effects. Other movies followed this one and in the words of the Terminator himself, “I’ll be back”.

Starship Troopers (1997)

In the distant future, Earth is at war with a race of giant alien insects. Little is known about the Bugs except that they are intent on the eradication of all human life. The Bugs are a ruthless enemy with only one mission: survival of their species no matter what the cost.

Starship Troopers is a military science fiction action film It is directed by Paul Verhoeven and is based on the novel of the same name by Robert A. Heinlein’s. This is the only movie in the Starship Troopers franchise to get a theatrical release. Initially the movie received negative reviews, however it has aged well and the response over time has become more positive with the movie being praised for its political satire.

Ghost In The Shell (1995)

Cyborg federal agent Maj. Motoko Kusanagi is trailing The Puppet Master, who is illegally hacking into the computerized minds of cyborg-human hybrids. Her pursuit of a man who can modify the identity of strangers leaves Motoko pondering her own makeup and what life might be like if she had more human traits.

Ghost in the Shell is an animated neo-noir cyberpunk thriller film directed by Mamoru Oshii. It is based on the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow. Upon its release critics were quick to praise the movie for its narrative, visuals, and musical score. But it still did not perform well at the box office and it was only upon its release to home video that the movie become a cult classic. A whole franchise was born and whether or not anime is your thing this is a must see movie!

Men In Black (1997)

They are the best-kept secret in the universe. Kay and Jay are providers of immigration services and regulators of all things alien on Earth – Men in Black. While investigating a series of unregistered close encounters, the MIB agents uncover the deadly plot of an intergalactic terrorist.

This is a sci fi action comedy starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. The movie received huge praise, particularly the performances of the two leads, its script and set pieces. The movie has spawned two sequels, a spin off move and an animated television series. If you have never watched anything in this franchise then then you don’t know what you are missing!

Escape from LA (1996)

In 2013, the United States president is exiling all citizens who don’t conform to his hyper-conservative views to LA, which became an island after a huge earthquake. But when the president’s daughter nabs the detonator to her dad’s apocalyptic weapon and sneaks into LA, commando-turned-crook Snake Plissken is sent to retrieve her. And if he doesn’t succeed quickly, he’ll be executed.

This is a 1996 post-apocalyptic action film co-written, co-scored, and directed by John Carpenter. It stars Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken. Reviews were mixed and the movie was a box office bomb. But as so often happens with box office failures this movie has gone on to be rewarded cult status. And is now a must watch 90s movie!

Tank Girl (1995)

After a comet disrupts the rain cycle of Earth, the planet has become a desolate, barren desert by the year 2033. With resources scarce, Kesslee, head of the powerful and evil Water & Power Corporation, has taken control of the water supply. Unwilling to cower under Kesslee’s tyrannical rule, a pair of outlaws – Tank Girl and Jet Girl – rise up.

This is a science fiction post-apocalyptic film directed by Rachel Talalay. It is based on the British comic series of the same name created by Jamie Hewlett. The film stars Lori Petty, Naomi Watts, Ice-T and Malcolm McDowell. This movie was a box office failure but has gone on to achieve cult classic status and being praised for its feminist themes.

12 Monkeys (1995)

Traveling back in time isn’t simple, as James Cole learns the hard way. Imprisoned in the 2030s, James is recruited for a mission that will send him back to the 1990s. Once there, he’s supposed to gather information about a nascent plague that’s about to exterminate the vast majority of the world’s population.

This sci fi movie is directed by Terry Gilliam and is inspired by Chris Marker’s 1962 short film La Jetée. With an all star cast consisting of Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, and Brad Pitt. A huge critical and commercial success with Pitt’s performance particularly praised, leading him to be nominated for an Oscar and to win a Golden Globe. This one one 90s sci fi movie not to miss!

Mars Attacks (1995)

An army of aliens from Mars visit Earth and meet the president of the United states under peaceful pretences. However, they reveal their true intentions when they start attacking cities.

This is an alien invasion sci fi comedy directed by Tim Burton with a big name ensemble cast, featuring Jack Nicholson and Glenn Close among many others. Upon its release this movie was a box office bomb, especially in comparison to its production and advertising budget. But it did better upon its home release. Also reviews for the movie have been very mixed but if you fancy some light-hearted sci fi fun then this is the movie for you!

Star Trek Generations (1994)

Captain Picard and his crew come across Dr Soran, a renegade scientist who has sinister plans. He must take the help of Kirk, who is presumed to be dead, in order to stop Soran.

Star Trek Generations is the seventh movie in the Star Trek franchise. Malcolm McDowell joins the cast along with stars from the 1960s TV show and the 1987 series The Next Generation, including William Shatner and Patrick Stewart. The movie was a box office success but reviews were mixed. However if you are a Trekkie then this is a must watch movie!

Dune (1984)

In the year 10191, a spice called melange is the most valuable substance known in the universe. And its only source is the desert planet Arrakis. A royal decree awards Arrakis to Duke Leto Atreides and ousts his bitter enemies, the Harkonnens. However, when they violently seize back their fiefdom, it is up to Paul – Leto’s son – to lead the Fremen in a battle for control of the planet.

Based on Frank Herbert’s masterpiece of the same name and there has recently been a remake starring Jason Momoa and Zendeya. You should still make a point of watching this original if you haven’t already done so!

Akira (1988)

In 1988 the Japanese government drops an atomic bomb on Tokyo after ESP experiments on children go awry. In 2019, 31 years later, Kaneda – a bike gang leader – tries to save his friend Tetsuo from a secret government project. Kaneda battles anti-government activists, politicians, scientists and a military leader. Until Tetsuo’s supernatural powers suddenly manifest.

This Japanese animated cyberpunk action film has received heavy critical praise and is regarded as one of the greatest animated and science fiction films ever made. So if you haven’t managed to catch this one yet make it a priority!

The Thing (1982)

In remote Antarctica, a group of American research scientists are disturbed at their base camp by a helicopter shooting at a sled dog. When they take in the dog, it brutally attacks both humans and canines in the camp. And they discover that the beast can assume the shape of its victims. Now, a helicopter pilot and the camp doctor lead the camp crew in a desperate battle against the vicious creature.

This is a sci fi horror movie directed by John Carpenter and stars Kurt Russell. On its theatrical release the movie was subject to mostly negative reviews but upon release to home video everything changed. The movie found a more appreciative audience and began to go down as a cult classic. It is now regarded as being on of the best science fiction and horror films ever made.

2010 The Year We Make Contact (1984)

Brave explorers are headed for the far reaches of the galaxy in the continuation of the story that began with 2001: A Space Odyssey. Their destination is Jupiter. The Russian and American astronauts will conduct their investigation on what led to the disaster for the deceased astronauts who preceded them.

This movie is the sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey and is based on the novel by Arthur C. Clarke 2010: Odyssey Two. The movie was a hit both at the box office and critics upon its release. This is a must see movie!

The Dead Zone (1984)

When Johnny Smith awakens from a coma caused by a car accident, he finds that years have passed and he now has psychic abilities. Heartbroken that his girlfriend has moved on with her life, Johnny also must contend with his unsettling powers, which allow him to see a person’s future with a mere touch. And after seeing danger in the future of an aspiring politician, Johnny resolves to kill him.

This sci fi thriller is based on the book of the same name from Stephen King. The movie was a hit with critics and Christopher Walken’s performance was particularly well received. At the time it was said to be one of the best big screen adaptions of a Stephen King book.

1984 (1985)

A man loses his identity while living under a repressive regime. Winston Smith is a government employee whose job involves the rewriting of history in a manner that casts his fictional country’s leaders in a charitable light. His trysts with Julia provide his only measure of enjoyment, but lawmakers frown on the relationship. And in this closely monitored society, there is no escape from Big Brother.

This dystopian sci fi based on the classic book of the same name by George Orwell features Richard Burton’s last on screen appearance. The movie captures the darkness of Orwell’s book and isn’t an easy watch but it is well worth it.

Flight Of The Navigator (1986)

This Disney adventure tells the story of 12-year-old David who lives with his family in Fort Lauderdale. When he awakens from being accidentally knocked out in the forest near his home, he finds that eight years have passed. His family is overjoyed to have him back. But are just as perplexed as he is by the fact that he hasn’t aged. When a NASA scientist discovers a UFO nearby, David gets the chance to unravel the mystery and recover the life he lost.

This sci fi adventure film is one of the first movies to extensively use CGI. Since it’s release it has become a cult classic with a large sci fi cult following. There is a reboot in the making, it will be a huge task to match the awesomeness of the original. But give this a watch while we wait to find out!.

E.T. – The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

After a gentle alien becomes stranded on Earth, the being is discovered and befriended by a young boy named Elliott. Bringing the extra-terrestrial into his suburban California house, Elliott introduces the alien as E.T., to his brother and his little sister, Gertie. So the children decide to keep its existence a secret. Soon, however, E.T. falls ill. This results in government intervention and a dire situation for both Elliott and the alien.

This alien sci fi classic directed by Steven Spielberg is one of the biggest movies of the 80s. It has received very positive critical acclaim and it is well deserved. If you somehow haven’t seen this movie yet then don’t miss out. Keep the tissues handy though (or is that just us?)!

The Running Man (1987)

In the year 2019, America is a totalitarian state where the favorite television program is The Running Man. It’s a game show in which prisoners must run to freedom to avoid a brutal death. Having been made a scapegoat by the government, an imprisoned Ben Richards has the opportunity to make it back to the outside again by being a contestant on the deadly show. Although the twisted host, Damon Killian, has no intention of letting him escape.

The second movie on this list that is an adaption of a Stephen King book (again of the same title). There is also a new adaption of this movie in the works (being written by Edgar Wright). So catch this classic now before the new version hits!

Predator (1987)

Dutch is a soldier of fortune and is hired by the U.S. government to secretly rescue a group of politicians trapped in Guatemala. But when Dutch and his team, which includes weapons expert Blain and CIA agent George, land in Central America, something is gravely wrong. After finding a string of dead bodies, the crew discovers they are being hunted by a brutal creature with superhuman strength and the ability to disappear into its surroundings.

This sci fi action horror was a huge success and spawned a franchise of Predator films, books, toys and games. It was directed by John McTiernan and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was the second highest box office taker in the year of its release and was hugely praised. Definitely one to watch!

Aliens (1986)

After floating in space for 57 years, Lt. Ripley’s shuttle is found by a deep space salvage team. Upon arriving at LV-426, the marines find only one survivor, a nine year old girl named Newt. But even these battle-hardened marines with all the latest weaponry are no match for the hundreds of aliens that have invaded the colony.

This sci fi horror action film from James Cameron is the sequel to 1979’s classic Alien. Regarded as being a worthy successor to the original Alien movie this is absolutely a must watch movie!

Lifeforce (1985)

When a space mission involving American and British astronauts encounters an alien craft, the humanoids within are brought aboard the shuttle. Back on Earth, one of the extra-terrestrials, who appears to be a gorgeous woman, proceeds to suck the life force out of various Londoners, turning the town into a city of roaming half-dead people. When Tom Carlsen, a surviving astronaut, realizes what is happening, he sets out to stop the ruthless alien presence.

This sci fi horror is based on Colin Wilson’s book The Space Vampires. Unfortunately the movie received mostly negative reviews and was a bit of a bomb at the box office. But since then this movie has achieved cult status and isn’t one to miss!

The Last Starfighter (1984)

After finally achieving the high score on Starfighter, his favorite arcade game, Alex Rogan meets the game’s designer. Centauri reveals that he created Starfighter as a training ground for developing and recruiting actual pilots to help fight a war in space. Whisked away from the banality of his trailer park life to a distant alien planet, Alex struggles to use his video game-playing skills to pilot a real ship, with real lives at stake.

This space opera is one of the first movies to use extensive CGI. Though the plot isn’t too heavy or original this movie has been praised for the cast’s performance and is definitely still worth a watch!

Short Circuit (1986)

When one of an experimental range of military robots is hit by lightning, it is given consciousness. It escapes from the military and befriends a young woman, Stephanie Speck. Its creator, Newton Crosby, is desperate to find it, or his entire project may be scrapped.

This sci fi comedy starring the lovable robot with human like intelligence is a fun watch so if comedy with AI robots is your thing then check this out!

Flash Gordon (1980)

Although NASA scientists are claiming the unexpected eclipse and strange “hot hail” are nothing to worry about, Dr. Hans Zarkov knows better. So he takes football star Flash Gordon and travel agent Dale Arden with him into space to rectify things. They land on planet Mongo, where the despot Ming the Merciless is attacking Earth out of pure boredom. With the help of a race of Hawkmen, Flash and the gang struggle to save their home planet.

This space opera is based on the comic strip of the same name created by Alex Raymond.  It wasn’t a hit at the box office but has since become a cult classic so catch this one for sure!

Repo Man (1984)

After being fired from his job, Los Angeles slacker and punk rocker Otto lands a gig working for an eccentric repossession agent named Bud. At first, Otto is reluctant to work as a repo man, but he grows to love the fast-paced job. After learning of a Chevy Malibu that has been given a $20,000 price tag, Otto embarks on a quest to find the car with the beautiful Leila, who claims the trunk’s contents are otherworldly.

This science fiction black comedy had a troubled release as it wasn’t deemed as being marketable. However the movie received critical acclaim and has since become a cult classic. This is a must watch!

Blade Runner (1982)

Deckard is forced by the police Boss to continue his old job as Replicant Hunter. His assignment: eliminate four escaped Replicants from the colonies who have returned to Earth. Before starting the job, Deckard goes to the Tyrell Corporation and he meets Rachel, a Replicant girl he falls in love with.

This sci fi dystopian classic is an adaptation of of Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and has since become an acclaimed cult classic. It was directed by Ridley Scott and starred Harrison Ford. The film has also influenced many other movies, tv shows, anime and video games. The sequel Blade Runner 2049 was released in 2017 but is not regarded as highly as this original.

Back To The Future (1985)

Small-town California teen Marty McFly is thrown back into the ’50s when an experiment by his eccentric scientist friend Doc Brown goes awry. Traveling through time in a modified DeLorean car, Marty encounters young versions of his parents. And must make sure that they fall in love or he’ll cease to exist. Even more dauntingly, Marty has to return to his own time and save the life of Doc Brown.

This time travelling film is another that was so successful that it spawned a whole Back To The Future franchise. A Blockbuster box office hit the movie was released to huge critical acclaim and it is well deserved. If you have never seen this movie then you don’t know what you have missed!

Robocop (1987)

In a violent, near-apocalyptic Detroit, evil corporation Omni Consumer Products wins a contract from the city government to privatize the police force. To test their crime-eradicating cyborgs, the company leads street cop Alex Murphy into an armed confrontation with crime lord Boddicker. So they can use his body to support their untested RoboCop prototype. But when RoboCop learns of the company’s nefarious plans, he turns on his masters.

This sci fi action film was such a huge success that it generated a whole Robocop franchise with sequels, TV shows, video games, toys and other merch. Audiences and critics alike rated the movie well. The movie is on the violent side but is a must watch 80s movie!

Tron (1982)

Talented computer engineer Kevin Flynn finds out that Ed Dillinger, an executive at his company, has been stealing his work. So he tries to hack into the system. However, Flynn is transported into the digital world. There, he has to face off against Dillinger’s computerized likeness and the imposing Master Control Program. Aided by Tron and Yori, Flynn becomes a freedom fighter for the oppressed programs of the grid.

This is a sci fi action adventure 80s classic! Along with Tron this is one of the first movies to use extensive CGI. Upon release this wasn’t the biggest box office success but did receive a large amount of critical praise. The movie also generated huge Cult status and has inspired many other forms of art.

Weird Science (1985)

Teen misfits Gary and Wyatt design their ideal woman on a computer. And a freak electrical accident brings her to life in the form of the lovely, superhuman Lisa. She outfits Gary and Wyatt in cool clothes, surprises them with a Porsche and helps them stand up to jerks Ian and Max. But, all the while, the boys must hide Lisa’s existence from Wyatt’s nightmare of a big brother.

This is a science fiction comedy from John Hughes. This was a fan favorite in the 80s and if you are looking for something more light hearted then this movie may be your thing!

The Fly (1986)

When scientist Seth Brundle completes his teleportation device, he decides to test its abilities on himself. Unbeknownst to him, a housefly slips in during the process, leading to a merger of man and insect. Initially, Brundle appears to have undergone a successful teleportation. But the fly’s cells begin to take over his body. As he becomes increasingly fly-like, Brundle’s girlfriend is horrified as the person she once loved deteriorates into a monster.

This sci fi horror is a remake of the 1958 film of the same name. Starting Jeff Goldblum it was released to massive praise from critics and audiences alike. With Goldblum’s performance and the special effects/ visual effects receiving specific praise. If you have never seen this gem then don’t miss out!

Return of the Jedi (1983)

Luke Skywalker battles horrible Jabba the Hut and cruel Darth Vader to save his comrades in the Rebel Alliance and triumph over the Galactic Empire. Han Solo and Princess Leia reaffirm their love and team with Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, the Ewoks and the androids C-3PO and R2-D2 to aid in the disruption of the Dark Side and the defeat of the evil emperor.

The last movie in the Star Wars Space opera series, the movie was well received all around and is regarded as a fitting ending to the Star Wars trilogy. Watch the whole trilogy now!

The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

The adventure continues in this Star Wars sequel. Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia and Chewbacca face attack by the Imperial forces and its AT-AT walkers on the ice planet Hoth. While Han and Leia escape in the Millennium Falcon, Luke travels to Dagobah in search of Yoda. Only with the Jedi master’s help will Luke survive when the dark side of the Force beckons him into the ultimate duel with Darth Vader.

This epic space opera is the follow up to the first movie, Star Wars (A New Hope). Reception was initially mixed to this movie due to the change in tone from the first film but it has grown to be as beloved as the original Star Wars.

Spaceballs (1987)

In a distant galaxy, planet Spaceball has depleted its air supply, leaving its citizens reliant on a product called Perri-Air. In desperation, Spaceball’s leader President Skroob orders the evil Dark Helmet to kidnap Princess Vespa of oxygen-rich Druidia. And hold her hostage in exchange for air. But help arrives for the Princess in the form of renegade space pilot Lone Starr and his half-man, half-dog partner, Barf.

This is a space opera parody from Mel Brooks starring John Candy. This is a fun sci fi romp that is definitely a must watch!

They Live (1988)

Nada, a wanderer without meaning in his life, discovers a pair of sunglasses capable of showing the world the way it truly is. As he walks the streets of Los Angeles, Nada notices that both the media and the government are comprised of subliminal messages meant to keep the population subdued, and that most of the social elite are skull-faced aliens bent on world domination. With this shocking discovery, Nada fights to free humanity from the mind-controlling aliens.

This sci fi action film is based on Ray Nelson’s short story Eight O’Clock in the Morning. It was directed by John Carpenter and starred WWE star Roddy Piper. This movie was a minor success upon release but has since become a must watch cult classic!

Starman (1984)

Answering a NASA message intended for aliens, a space being tries to contact mankind, but an American missile grounds his ship. Scrambling, the so-called Starman inhabits the body of a late Wisconsinite and kidnaps the dead man’s widow, Jenny Hayden. Determined to reunite with a vessel from his home planet at a predetermined site, Starman and Jenny travel to Arizona. Pursued by military officials trying to kill him, Starman forges a lasting bond with Jenny.

This sci fi romance drama was directed by John Carpenter and starred Jeff Bridges. Although not a box office hit the movie was a hit with critics and audiences alike and Bridges was nominated for an Oscar for his role. So if you like a little romance with your sci fi then this is the title for you!
